Essilor International is a French multinational ophthalmic optics company that designs, produces and sells lenses for vision correction or protection. Its headquarters are in Charenton-le-Pont (near Paris), France.
Essilor is the world's largest manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses. The company is responsible for creating the Varilux brand, the world's first progressive lens that corrects presbyopia and allows the user to see clearly at near, intermediate and distance. The company was created from the merger of the ophthalmology companies Essel and Silor in 1972.
Since the late 1980s, it has been a leader in its industry worldwide, producing over 200 million eyeglass lenses annually. The Essilor Optical Laboratory Poland factory has been operating in Warsaw since 2002.
