Essilor International is a French multinational ophthalmic optics company that designs, manufactures and sells lenses for vision correction or protection. Its headquarters are in Charenton-le-Pont (near Paris) in France.
Essilor is the world's largest manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses. The company is responsible for creating the Varilux brand, the world's first progressive lens that corrects presbyopia and enables the wearer to see clearly near, intermediate and far. The company was formed from the merger of the ophthalmic companies Essel and Silor in 1972.
Since the late 1980s, it has been a world leader in its industry, producing over 200 million spectacle lenses annually. The Essilor Optical Laboratory Poland factory has been operating in Warsaw since 2002.
